Actisaf® Sc 47: Advancing Sustainability in Dairy and Beef Production

Marquette-lez-Lille (France), May 28, 2024. —Actisaf® Sc 47, developed by Phileo by Lesaffre, continues to lead the agricultural industry in promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship. With a focus on enhancing animal health and welfare while minimizing environmental impact, Actisaf® Sc 47 offers groundbreaking solutions for both dairy and beef production systems.

Driving Sustainability in Dairy Farming:

Actisaf® Sc 47 serves as a pioneering solution for farmers seeking to improve the sustainability of their dairy farming operations. As the first yeast probiotic to showcase strong ISO-compliant evidence of environmental benefits, Actisaf® Sc 47 sets a new standard in yeast probiotics feed supplements. The comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted by Phileo by Lesaffre highlights the significant environmental advantages of incorporating Actisaf® Sc 47 into dairy cows’ diets.

Key Findings of the Dairy LCA Study:

The LCA study, conducted in collaboration with Blonk consultants, assessed Actisaf® Sc 47’s environmental footprint from cradle to farm gate. Results showed that incorporating Actisaf® Sc 47 into dairy diets can lead to a reduction in carbon footprint by up to 5%, primarily due to enhanced feed efficiency. This reduction, equivalent to removing approximately 20 new cars from EU roads annually per typical European dairy farm, underscores the substantial environmental impact of Actisaf® Sc 47 adoption.

Contributing to Environmental Sustainability in Beef Production:

In addition to dairy farming, Actisaf® Sc 47 plays a crucial role in advancing sustainability in beef production. A separate LCA study on fattening period in beef, conducted in 2022 with EVEA, demonstrated significant reductions in CO2 impact ranging from 3.8% to 6.6%. These findings highlight Actisaf® Sc 47’s efficacy in optimizing feed efficiency and minimizing environmental footprint in beef production systems.

EFSA Opinion on Actisaf® Sc 47 Re-authorization:

Recently the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a positive opinion regarding the re-authorization of Actisaf® Sc 47 for cattle for fattening in the EU. The EFSA Scientific Panel on Additives and Products concluded that Actisaf® Sc 47 is efficacious as a zootechnical additive for cattle for fattening, further validating its safety and effectiveness across both dairy and beef sectors.

Continuing the Journey Towards Sustainable Farming:

The extensive research and data compiled in the Actisaf® Sc 47 LCAs underscore its pivotal role in advancing sustainable farming practices. As the agricultural sector evolves to meet global environmental challenges, Actisaf® Sc 47 continues to drive positive change and foster a more sustainable future for farming communities worldwide.
