They have around 400 cows calving all year around, and\u00a0rear all young stock, with heifer\u00a0replacements calving at around 24\u00a0months and all other cattle being sold at around 20 months of age\u00a0as store cattle.<\/p>\n<p>The brothers used to grow maize and wholecrop silage but, with\u00a0the farm extending up to 700 ft. above sea level, those crops could\u00a0prove unreliable and, consequently,\u00a0weren\u2019t very cost effective. As\u00a0a result, they now run a simple ration based around three cuts\u00a0of good quality grass silage, with some red clover\/hybrid grass\u00a0mixtures.\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cGrass silage is good for milk quality and the simpler\u00a0system suits our land. Cows average around 9,000 <\/strong><\/em>litres<em><strong>\/year with\u00a0milk composition averaging 4.30 <\/strong><\/em>per cent<em><strong> butterfat\u00a0and 3.25 <\/strong><\/em>per\u00a0cent<em><strong> protein.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, what makes Gary and Steven so confident that Actisaf<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is worth\u00a0including, even when low returns put pressure on costs?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cWe include Actisaf<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> in our blend and last year we changed blend\u00a0and that meant no more Actisaf<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Gary explained. <em><strong>\u201cShortly after\u00a0the <\/strong><\/em>change<em><strong> our milk quality dropped from\u00a04.3 <\/strong><\/em>per cent<em><strong> butterfat to\u00a03.8 <\/strong><\/em>per cent<em><strong> butterfat, which was a concern. We decided to go back\u00a0on Actisaf<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> to try to <\/strong><\/em>stabilise<em><strong> milk composition. Butterfat returned\u00a0to the previous\u00a0level, which was great, and this seemed to confirm\u00a0a strong correlation between Actisaf<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> inclusion and milk quality.
