Buyers will come\u00a0to market with a lorry and are looking to buy a number of\u00a0animals. I\u00a0want to provide a group of very similar size and condition that they can\u00a0purchase in one lot.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s with this in mind that Russell has developed both breeding and\u00a0feeding management at Red House Farm. He uses four bulls, with\u00a0different traits, across the cows in\u00a0order to maintain uniformity of\u00a0calves. A Limousin is used on heifers and a selection of Charolais bulls\u00a0are used on older cattle, and all bulls are purchased on EBV traits.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to feeding, Russell is again keen to help calves express\u00a0their natural potential; <em><strong>\u201cWhen the calves are about nine to 10 months\u00a0old they hit a stage where they\u00a0just look right. You can see the well\u00a0rounded potential in the animal and it is at this stage that I want to\u00a0present my cattle to customers. Any earlier or later and cattle can be\u00a0going through a growth stage and not look so attractive.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>After talking to Mike Evans, from Bibby\u2019s, Russell has included <a href=\"http:\/\/phileo-lesaffre.com\/en\/actisaf\/\"><strong>Actisaf<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0yeast probiotic<\/strong><\/a> in the calves\u2019 creep feed. Calves are weaned at eight to nine\u00a0months old and are creep\u00a0fed ad-lib on a bespoke calf rearing blend\u00a0from August onwards, to help them get used to their new diet before\u00a0housing. They are housed in October or November and in\u00a0the winter\u00a0calves have their own creep feeding area and receive 4kg\/head.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cWithin six weeks of starting the Actisaf<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> yeast probiotic I noticed a bloom to the\u00a0cattle,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> says Russell. <strong><em>\u201cI think rumen health is crucial to the calves.\u00a0If cattle aren\u2019t right on the on the\u00a0inside they don\u2019t look right on the\u00a0outside. The calves need to make the best use of the feed they eat,\u00a0the Actisaf<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> aids digestion so that the feed isn\u2019t just passing through\u00a0the\u00a0gut.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mike Evans from Bibby comments; <em><strong>\u201cActisaf<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> yeast probiotic helps rumen function\u00a0in a number of ways. It stabilises rumen pH, ensuring maximum feed\u00a0utilisation and efficient\u00a0digestion. It also helps to manage and reduce\u00a0the negative effect of transition between diets, such as when calves are\u00a0brought indoors and off grass. It looks after those bugs\u00a0in the rumen\u00a0that do all the hard work in the gut.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The results speak for themselves in Russells\u2019 high quality cattle, with\u00a0buyers returning time and again to buy. Steers were sold at market\u00a0at an average weight of about 410\u00a0kg, at 9-10 months of age and\u00a0made in the region on \u00a3950 &#8211; \u00a31050. Heifers were sold at a weight of\u00a0approximately 400 kg and averaged \u00a3870 in 2016.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThe right genetics and the right feed is the best way to<\/em> realise that\u00a0potential and provide quality across the group. I\u2019m always trying to\u00a0provide the customer with what\u00a0they are after and a group of attractive,\u00a0uniform, well grown calves, has great potential to the buyer,\u201d<\/strong> Russell\u00a0concludes.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;
