And they must be doing something right, as people\u00a0come from far and wide to buy produce in their farm shop, with\u00a0the\u00a0restaurant serving around 500 people every day, six days a week!<\/p>\n<p>To cater for this demand for high-quality meat, Colin now finishes\u00a0around 600 mainly continental cattle a year, which are all butchered\u00a0and sold through the farm shop\u00a0and restaurant.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cYou just can\u2019t beat home-grown food, and the flavour and texture\u00a0makes all the hard work worthwhile,\u201d explains Colin. \u201cWe know\u00a0that our customers care about the\u00a0origin of their food, and know\u00a0that home-grown is best.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cattle are bought in as stores at around 480kg and Colin prefers\u00a0Charolais heifers, although he has a mix of different continental and\u00a0native bred cattle on the farm at\u00a0any one time. Cattle are batched\u00a0as they come on to the farm and are fed on home-grown barley;\u00a0highly digestible, energy-dense and protein-rich grass silage and\u00a0a\u00a0home mix that incorporates maize, distillers, bread and straw.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cWe aim to put on around 120kg in about 70-80 days to finish the\u00a0cattle at about 600kg live weight, which should give a carcass of\u00a0around 340kg,\u201d Colin said. \u201cWe take\u00a0three cuts of leafy, young grass\u00a0silage each year, which is highly digestible and has high dry matter\u00a0and high protein, and when this is fed with our home-grown barley\u00a0it\u00a0really is rocket fuel for the cattle.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Given the high quality of feeds used, it is important to Colin\u00a0that rumen function is maintained to provide an easy and quick\u00a0transition on to the finishing diet when cattle\u00a0arrive on the farm\u00a0and consistent performance throughout the finishing period.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cWe add<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/phileo-lesaffre.com\/en\/actisaf\/\">Actisaf<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> yeast probiotic<\/a> to our home-mixed ration to protect\u00a0rumen function and add <a href=\"http:\/\/phileo-lesaffre.com\/en\/safmannan\/\">Safmannan<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0premium\u00a0yeast fraction\u00a0rich in mannan-oligosaccharides and \u03b2-glucans (1,3 and 1,6)<\/a> to support the immune system\u00a0during the housing period,\u201d<\/strong> Colin\u00a0explained. <strong><em>\u201cSince we\u2019ve been\u00a0using these feed ingredients we find that cattle get going quicker\u00a0when they arrive on the farm, are more content, dung consistency\u00a0has\u00a0improved considerably and we get a faster finish \u2013 we\u2019ve\u00a0definitely\u00a0noticed a difference.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cIt is really important that we get cattle finished when we expect\u00a0them to be, as we need a steady flow of 10-12 beasts a week to\u00a0slaughter to meet the demand from the\u00a0shop and restaurant.\u00a0Actisaf<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and Safmannan<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> help ensure that we don\u2019t get any upsets\u00a0through the finishing period and so I wouldn\u2019t want to be without\u00a0them now,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Colin\u00a0concluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The McKee family has been farming at Strangford View Farm in the Craigantlet Hills outside Newtownards, Northern Ireland since 1922<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":411660,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[58],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-397179","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-farming"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.9 (Yoast SEO v27.6) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Actisaf\u00ae and Safmannan\u00ae support production of fantastic home-grown beef &#8226;
